After eight years of war in China, and four against America and the Allies, Japan was a burned-out husk. At least 1.2 million Japanese soldiers and sailors were dead, along with hundreds of thousands of Japanese civilians killed by American bombs. Whole cities had burned to the ground in incendiary bombing firestorms, including Tokyo. Nagasaki and Hiroshima were smoking, radioactive ruins. American subs had cut off the nation's trade, starving the citizens.
