The Constitution's First Amendment says, "Congress shall make no law . . . abridging the freedom of speech." Americans tend to forget that there are also times when, legally, we have to keep our big mouths shut.
So when aren't you free to shoot from the lip? There are basically four types of speech that the First Amendment doesn't protect: obscenity, incitement to illegal action, defamation, and fighting words.
