Beating Barbary's Pirates

An American frigate battles pirate corsairs, in 1803

Two centuries ago, pirates from four rogue states on North Africa's Barbary Coast--Morocco, Algiers, Tunis, and Tripoli--terrorized Mediterranean sea lanes.

These notorious "Barbary pirates" attacked merchant vessels, boarded them, stole their cargo, and held their crews captive until their countries agreed to pay a ransom. No ransom, and your countrymen got sold into slavery. Eventually, most countries found it easier simply to pay the pirate states yearly tribute--in effect, protection money.
